Why Do Kinetic LED Display Quotes Vary So Much?

You send the same screen dimensions to three suppliers and receive three very different prices. Each proposal promises a moving LED installation, but the descriptions do not explain whether the systems will perform the same way or include the same work. The difference may come from the hardware, the movement being offered or the services included after delivery. Understanding kinetic LED display cost factors helps buyers identify those differences before choosing a supplier. Start by asking each company to price the same visual result and project scope.

Screen Size Is Only the Starting Point

For a conventional video wall, buyers often begin with display area and pixel pitch. A kinetic LED display adds a mechanical system, motion control and coordination between movement and video.

Two proposals for the same visible area can therefore describe substantially different installations. One might divide the surface into many small moving sections. Another might use larger sections with fewer independently controlled movements.

The intended effect matters too. A subtle wave, a product reveal and a sequence of independently moving blocks may require different arrangements. A reference video helps communicate the idea, but ask suppliers to identify which parts of that effect their quoted configuration can reproduce.

Compare the proposed movement before comparing the price per square metre.

How Motion Units Change Kinetic LED Display Cost Factors

Ask how many independently moving units are included and how they are arranged. Smaller units can provide more divisions across the surface, but they also change the quantity of mechanical assemblies and control connections.

For example, JR Visual’s 3D kinetic LED display includes indoor configurations using 160 mm and approximately 250 mm motion units. These produce different moving-unit layouts across a similar display area. The supplier should explain which arrangement suits the requested effect.

Request a drawing showing the moving sections. Check their quantity, dimensions and direction of travel against the reference sequence.

More moving units do not automatically make a proposal better. The useful question is whether the additional divisions contribute to an effect the project actually needs. If the content uses broad, simple movements, a different arrangement may deserve comparison.

Check Whether the Quotes Describe the Same Movement

The word “kinetic” covers several types of physical motion. A rotating structure and a wall of forward-moving modules should not be treated as equivalent offers simply because their visible dimensions are similar.

A DNA rotating LED screen provides a different movement format from a display built around forward-and-back travel. Establish which format matches the creative brief before asking suppliers to compete on price.

Within the selected format, confirm the required travel, operating speed, sequence and expected daily use. Ask suppliers to distinguish standard capabilities from project-specific work.

A lower quote may reflect a simpler effect that is entirely suitable for the project. It may also omit a movement shown in the reference. Written confirmation makes that distinction visible.

Find Out What the Control Price Includes

A quotation might list a controller without explaining what the buyer receives with it.

Ask whether the price includes the LED processor, motion controller, playback equipment, software access and the configuration needed to run the agreed sequence. Identify any separate licence, computer or network equipment requirements.

If the installation must respond to a presenter, lighting desk or building control system, describe those actions in the inquiry. “Supports integration” is not a complete scope. Confirm who develops the interface, tests the commands and resolves compatibility issues.

Also ask what remains editable after handover. The operating team should understand which routine changes it can make and which require supplier support.

These details help distinguish a supplied collection of components from a configured system ready for the agreed use.

Separate Content Creation from Playback Setup

A demonstration video can make the proposed installation easy to imagine. It does not establish that custom content is included in the quotation.

Confirm whether the supplier provides a sample loop, adapts existing material or creates a new sequence for the buyer’s brand. State the number and duration of sequences, revision allowance and approval process.

Ask who prepares the final canvas and coordinates the animation with the physical movement. If an external creative agency is involved, identify the files and instructions it needs from the equipment supplier.

Compare content charges separately from hardware. This makes it easier to retain the required visual result while deciding who should produce it.

Installation Can Change the Total Project Budget

The display price may exclude the support frame, local electrical work, access equipment or installation labour. Another proposal may include some of these items, making its headline price higher.

Ask each supplier to state its installation responsibility. Remote guidance, an on-site supervisor and a complete installation team represent different services.

Provide venue drawings, access conditions and the available working period. A project installed during normal construction hours has different planning needs from one restricted to short overnight access.

Confirm who reviews the supporting structure and supplies the information needed for that review. Keep engineering, site preparation and commissioning responsibilities explicit.

The installation allowance should reflect the actual venue rather than an assumed open space with unrestricted access.

Put Delivery and After Sales Support on the Same Basis

Packing, freight and delivery arrangements can create another gap between quotations. Request package dimensions and weights, the delivery basis and the costs excluded from the offer.

The International Chamber of Commerce’s Incoterms rules clarify responsibilities, costs and risks associated with delivery. Record the agreed rule and named place where applicable, and list installation services separately.

For support, ask which spare parts are included and why those quantities were selected. Confirm warranty coverage, the process for reporting faults and responsibility for replacement shipping and labour.

Remote support hours and on-site attendance should also be clear. A statement offering after-sales service leaves too much unanswered when the installation is needed for an opening date or a scheduled presentation.

Ask Every Supplier to Complete One Comparison Sheet

Use a shared scope sheet instead of comparing differently structured PDFs. Mark each item as included, optional, excluded or awaiting confirmation. An unanswered item should remain unresolved until the supplier clarifies it.

Comparison item What the supplier should confirm
Display configuration Active dimensions, pixel pitch and resolution
Motion system Unit layout, movement capability and agreed effect
Controls Hardware, software access and integration work
Content Sequences, revisions and motion coordination
Installation Structure, labour, supervision and commissioning
Delivery and support Packing, freight basis, spares and warranty scope

If the proposal exceeds the budget, request alternatives against the same brief. Ask what changes in the visible result, operating routine and support scope with each option.

A budget adjustment is easier to judge when the supplier explains what the project gains or loses.

Choose the Quote That Covers the Required Result

Before placing the order, ask the preferred supplier to demonstrate the relevant configuration or provide representative evidence of the agreed movement. Connect that review with written acceptance points for image performance, sequence operation and handover.

When discussing a project with the JR Visual team, provide the venue layout, reference effect, viewing distance, intended operating hours and target installation date. State which content, installation and support services you expect.

The best purchasing decision comes from knowing what each quoted total buys. Once the configuration and responsibilities are comparable, the remaining price difference becomes much easier to evaluate.
