A spotlight on the corporate market

With the demand for higher resolution, clearer detail and an uninterrupted canvas, Narrow Pixel Pitch (NPP) LED continues to be the product of choice for large scale applications, particularly in corporate installations.

The demand for a sub 2mm pixel pitch display is becoming ever more popular due to the resolution it can achieve within a smaller canvas size. The advancements in LED technology has meant that it can venture into markets where previously it may not have been suitable, such as corporate installations, where historically video wall and large format displays were used. LED has an array of key features that make for the perfect boardroom, reception and atrium display, without compromise.

A Seamless Viewing Experience

Where LED is being used for corporate presentations it is essential that the content is conveyed clearly and accurately, as studies show that high quality visual content adds to the effectiveness and influence of a presentation. For corporate applications, as in any install, it is essential that the product can deliver the ultimate image performance. With the advanced LED High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology adds clarity and sophistication to produce natural colour to deliver a detailed and realistic picture.

With LED, static information can be displayed without any risk as it does not suffer from image burn or image retention. LED is also bezel free, meaning your audience can see your content without any interruptions.

Low Maintenance and Reliability

Requirements of display products used in corporate environments often include; a low maintenance solution, low power consumption, operating temperatures and running costs. This can all be achieved with an LED display. LED displays are highly reliable, designed for 24/7 usage, built from high quality parts down to component level, providing a low maintenance solution with a lifespan of over 100,000 hours. Where the screens are in constant use, it is essential for corporate companies to try and keep the power usage down.

Unlike other display technologies, LED does not suffer catastrophic display failure; pixel failure can often go unnoticed by the untrained eye.

Install & Set-up

Where space is a premium, LED provides the slim depth often needed. With JR Visual Tec NPP series, it can be installed on walls requiring only 100mm of space, saving up to 80% of installation space compared to other display technologies.

Silent

While being used in a corporate application, the display must be silent in order not to distract audiences from the presentation or meeting. As LED is fanless, it provides completely silent operation, meaning it can be used in any environment without distraction.

5 Ways to Find the Right Video Wall Technology for your Broadcast Set

Digital display technology is enabling new trends in broadcast, both on-air and off-air. With a wide variety of ever-evolving technology, shopping for the best digital display to fit your broadcast set design can be overwhelming.

Refer to these 5 tips to help you choose the right video wall technology for your broadcast set design:

  1. What do you want your audience to see?

It is critical to consider display resolution because sufficient resolution will give your audience a clear view of your content. A low resolution display will result in pixelated or blurred visuals and may make content, especially fine details like text, unrecognizable from the viewers’ perspective.  This is especially true as more global broadcasters move to capturing and producing shows in 4k resolution and more of the set details are visible to the viewers.

Resolution is a factor of pixel density across a physical dimensions.  For popular direct view LED video walls, density is expressed in pixel pitch, which is the distance between the centers of two adjacent pixels.  The smaller the measurement, the closer the pixels and the finer detail you are able to achieve on the display.

Compatibility with preferred color temperatures and fine gray balance controls are critical for on-air use, as these are the key factors that will affect the color output of the display.

  1. How much space do you have?

Know the size of your set and exactly what you want to portray on camera. Are you looking to have a digital display make up your entire backdrop or just a portion of it as an accent? Are you looking for a more creative solution like a unique curve or shape? Do you need the display to mount directly to a wall or do you have adequate space to allow for a rear-installation and rear-access product.  The answers to these questions will be vital in determining the display technology that you’re looking for. We are seeing a trend of broadcasters putting large displays in the backdrop of their set and then using Vizrt’s real-time graphics engine to add augmented reality features to the content.

  1. How much do you value uptime?

Technical problems can be alarming to audiences and traumatizing for broadcasters. To avoid such situations, you must consider reliability for any mission critical use of your digital display. From sturdy metal-frame industrial designs to off-board components to redundant power supplies, look for displays and video walls that are designed for environments where downtime is not an option.  Of course, consumer- grade technology do not have the reliability required for on-camera applications.

  1. How important is serviceability?

Like most technology, keeping a digital display functioning at its highest potential and preventing technical problems will require some maintenance. It is important to find a display solution that is engineered specifically to make maintenance simpler, minimalizing the total cost of ownership as well as the time spent for possible repairs. Keep your eyes locked on companies who declare a commitment to excellent customer service to ensure your display is maintained appropriately throughout its life on set.

  1. Are you interested in LCD or LED solutions?

Based on the answers to the above questions, LCD and LED technology both come with their own set of strengths and challenges. While both types of digital displays can be configured into a wide range of sizes and resolutions, it is important to know how they differ in order to understand which qualities are most vital for your specific set design.

Modern LCD video walls feature narrow bezels, meaning they have frames around each individual display that covers critical electronics and from afar there are black lines creating a grid effect across the video wall. They have slim installation depths and are quite affordable for on-camera applications. They are a mature technology with features that make specification and installation easy.  The displays are very high resolution (in terms of pixel density for video walls). Canal+Group in France has a great example of LCD displays being used in their studio and they are growing in popularity in regional or local news broadcast sets

Direct View LED displays are the fastest growing video wall category in broadcast due to their ability to deliver seamless images with vivid colors and the ability to use LED in various shapes and sizes to create a more compelling on-camera experience. Check out the NBC Sports broadcast studio from their coverage of the Olympic Games in Rio for a great example of on-set LED video wall displays which were masked into interesting shapes and even embedded in the floor.

Don’t Go Astray with LCD—The Future is LED!

At long last, it’s time to install that show-stopping video wall you’ve been planning. You want it to be bright, flexible, energy-efficient, and cutting-edge—something truly unique and exciting!
But which kind of display should you use?

Until recently, most large-format video walls were built using LCD displays arranged in standard configurations: 2×2, 3×3, 4×4 and so on.  This was the preferred method for achieving large video images due, in part to the cost of LED display technology.  But now, with efficient, brighter LED technologies and manufacturing techniques, large-format LED displays are economically comparable with the older LCD matrix video walls they so easily outperform.
Liquid crystal displays (LCD) have been popular for years in both the video wall and consumer electronics markets. You have probably already used LCD technology several times already today and the technology is perfect for smartphones, computer monitors, and television screens. But when LCD displays are tiled together to create a video wall, the bezels (or visible edges of the cabinet) create “mullions” which interrupt the video image.  Even when expensive “ultra-thin-bezel” displays are used, the mullions are still there dividing the image.  Direct View LED panels assemble together with no visible bezels forming completely seamless video walls.
Recent innovations in LED manufacturing allow more brightness, higher resolutions, greater reliability and energy-efficiency than LCD displays with the best color accuracy and refresh rates of any display type available.  For large-format video experiences, Direct View LED is the obvious choice.  Here’s a quick comparison:
•    LCD monitors have bezels which interrupt the image
•    LCD monitors can exhibit “burn in” of an image type over time
•    LCD video walls require special pullout mounting brackets that allow precise physical alignment and are typically pretty thick
•    LCD monitors require frequent color calibration and physical alignment to keep them looking good
•    LCD monitors by their very nature prevent smooth curves
•    LCD monitors used with complex, non-standard designs require expensive image processors with outputs for each display
•    LCD video wall displays typically have much lower brightness levels than LED
•    LCD video wall displays are not available in outdoor configurations
•    LED displays have no bezels to interrupt the image
•    LED displays don’t require pullout brackets and the entire display including the framing can be 3″ thick or less
•    LED displays typically don’t require color calibration and the physical alignment does not change over time
•    LED displays offer greater shape flexibility including non-standard flat displays, curves, cylinders, thin ribbons, and outside corners
•    LED displays are controlled differently with a single processor and only a few outputs required to drive very large displays
•    LED displays perform better in high ambient lighting conditions than LCDs (even outdoors)
•    LED displays provide a wider viewing angle due to its direct emission of light
•    LED technology Is very robust and reliable, even in high humidity and in a wide range of temperatures
Numerous display technologies are available today. Each has value, but the unique characteristics of LED displays may better suit your needs.  And LED provides a lower total cost of ownership.  LED is more energy-efficient, requires virtually no periodic maintenance, installs quicker, and has a longer usable lifespan than LCD video walls.
